Applications open for John Gray bursary scheme

The John Gray Bursary scheme is now open for applications for the coming academic year. The Bursary was created by the Queens Cross Community Foundation in 2022 for residents living in the Queens Cross Housing Association (QCHA) area of Glasgow.

Applicants can apply for up to £2000 to help support them during their studies at College or University. Last year grants totalling £10,000 have helped six students starting full-time and part-time courses at college and university purchase educational essentials such as textbooks and electronic equipment to aid their studies.

The bursary helped people going to study at college and university, supporting local people from our communities as they embark on their studies. Inspired by former Queens Cross Housing Association chairperson John Gray, the fund is intended to offer financial support to people who could benefit from financial assistance to progress their education.

Glasgow UniversityJohn was also an elected member (City Councillor) for over 40 years and was involved in one of the City’s first initiatives to create a strategy to tackle multiple deprivation and was motivated to fight poverty and inequality. John promoted the development of youth and community work in Glasgow and favoured practical and “common sense” ways to help young people.

Feedback from last year’s beneficiaries emphasised how the bursary has helped them. One student told us, “Without the scheme it would have been very difficult for me to do my course. As a first year student I wasn’t aware of all the expenses that university life comes with. The scheme has made a very big difference to my studies so far. I was able to buy essential textbooks and an iPad to help me stay organised. And, it has also encouraged me to participate in social events at my student union which has helped me meet new people in my course.

John Gray, who the scheme is named after, passed away in 2019 after dedicating his life to the communities of Queens Cross and was a strong advocate of opportunities for its young people. Norman Gray, John’s nephew, is pleased that the scheme has helped local residents. “John was always clear-sighted about the importance of support for children and young people. “He would be delighted that Queens Cross Housing Association has set up a bursary scheme to give such practical support to the growth of the people and the community of the area.”
